Open Access

Publisher deals

The Library has agreements with some publishers to negotiate pilot financing models to help pay for APC charges and meet the growing demand for researchers to publish in Open Access journals. If you are publishing with these deals, you must state your Cranfield affiliation in your article.

Publishers with APC charges waived for Cranfield authors

Type of deal: Read and Publish Uncapped – articles with a Cranfield corresponding author can be made Open Access

Journals included: All ACS titles, both hybrid and fully OA journals.

Instructions for authors: Use your Cranfield University email address and ensure that Cranfield University is your institutional affiliation. If prompted, choose the CC-BY licence. Further help for authors.

Type of deal: Open Uncapped – all papers with a Cranfield corresponding author can be made Open Access.

Journals included: ACM journals and conference proceedings. Full list

Instructions for authors: Select Institutional Paid Open Access in your submission process. Use your Cranfield University email address and ensure that Cranfield University is your institutional affiliation. If prompted, choose the CC-BY licence. Further information.

Type of deal: Read and Publish Uncapped (in 2021) – articles with a Cranfield corresponding author will be published Open Access at no additional cost.

Journals included: Most CUP journals are included. A full list is available on the CUP website.

Type of deal: Read and Publish Uncapped – articles with a Cranfield corresponding author can be made Open Access.

Journals included: Core Hybrid. Cell Press and The Lancet are also covered, but with some restrictions. When publishing in eligible hybrid Cell Press journals, review articles and short survey article types are not eligible. When publishing in eligible journals from The Lancet, full length articles are the only eligible article type. A full list of titles is available on Elsevier’s website.
(NB: Outside of this deal, Cranfield authors publishing in fully Gold OA Elsevier journals will get a 15% discount).

Type of deal: Read and Publish Capped – articles with a Cranfield corresponding author can be made Open Access.
NB: If your article has more than one corresponding author, you will need to identify yourself as the Responsible Corresponding Author (RCA). Wiley use this role to identify the sole author who will be responsible for key post-publication actions and whose institutional affiliations will be used to determine eligibility for APC coverage.

Journals included: Most Wiley published hybrid and fully gold journals. The deal also covers Hindawi journals. A full list is available on Wiley’s website.

Type of deal: Fully Open Access – any article with a Cranfield corresponding author. ‘Flat Fee’ membership covering six core PLOS titles.

Journals included: PLOS Computational Biology, PLOS Digital Health, PLOS Genetics, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLOS ONE, PLOS Pathogens.

Type of deal: Read and Publish Capped – articles with a Cranfield corresponding author can be made Open Access.

Journals included: All RSC hybrid journals. NB: The deal also provides a 15% discount on APCs for RSC Gold OA journals.

NB: A deal mark as ‘capped’ means the publisher has set an annual limit on the number of articles that can be published Gold without paying an APC. This is most often at a UK HE collective level but sometimes can be per individual institution. We will post updates here if we reach those limits.

Publishers offering Cranfield authors an APC discount

Type of deal: 10% discount on one title.

Journals included: Only applied to Science Advances. (AAAS are currently exploring a way to make all their titles compliant with Plan S).

Instructions for authors: Ensure that Cranfield University is your institutional affiliation and select the CC-BY licence option.

Type of deal: The library has signed an agreement with Frontiers that entitles any article in Frontiers journals to receive 10% discount.

Journals included: All Frontiers titles. Full list.

Instructions for authors: Use your Cranfield University email address.

Type of deal:The library has signed an agreement with MDPI that entitles any article in any qualifying journal to receive 10% discount. Articles do not have to be in receipt of UKRI funding.
