Measuring your scholarly impact

An increasing number of tools and services have been developed to help users measure the impact of their research. These aim to help researchers find out where and how often their work has been cited.

Altmetrics Apps
A growing directory of altmetrics apps which enable you to measure your impact as a researcher.
Google Scholar
Google Scholar allows you to search selected academic publishers, institutional repositories and professional societies publications. You may be able to see the full text if the item is freely available on the internet or Cranfield has a subscription. Make Google Scholar work even harder for you!
ImpactStoryProfiles
ImpactStory enables you to discover the online impact of your research. Sign up with your Twitter account and it will provide data on your reach in blogs, news, social media and more.
IRUS-UK (Institutional Repository Usage Statistics)
IRUS-UK enables us to report on the usage of our institutional repository, CERES. Cranfield staff and researchers are able to check the number of times their items have been downloaded from CERES, both in total and by individual title. To log in, select the ‘Portal' tab, search for 'Cranfield University' and enter your Cranfield network username and password.
Publish or Perish
Publish or Perish is a software program that retrieves and analyzes academic citations. It uses Google Scholar to obtain the raw citations, then analyzes these and presents a number of statistics.
Scopus Journal Analyzer
Scopus offers tools to track, analyse and visualise research, including a "Compare Journal" tool which allows you to compare up to 10 journals using the SJR (SCImago Journal Rank), IPP (Impact Per Publication) AND SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) calculations. Scopus calculates the h-index of authors and provides an affiliation search showing the publishing activity of an institution and its collaboration affiliations.

Distinguish yourself

ORCID - Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier
Academics, researchers and contributors can register for a unique ID with ORCID. Provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and ensures that your work can be attributed to you. Guidance on how to set up an ORCID is available on the Intranet at: https://intranet.apps.cranfield.ac.uk/rltp/cris/Pages/ORCID.aspx

An index to quantify an individual’s scientific research output
Harzing
Proposed by Leo Egghe in 2006, the g-index is defined as follows: [Given a set of articles] ranked in decreasing order of the number of citations that they received, the g-index is the (unique) largest number such that the top g articles received (together) at least g2 citations. It aims to improve on the h-index by giving more weight to highly-cited articles.
