Academic English support

Introduction

Academic English language support is for those students who would like to improve their written and spoken academic English. The overall aim is to develop the language skills required for postgraduate study in the UK.

Why is it important?

It can help boost your confidence and improve your ability to communicate verbally and in written form.

What do I need to know?

Support is free and available to all taught and research students. We have a variety of support options:

Academic English tutorials: One to one consultation with an academic English tutor, perhaps to check the style, coherence and clarity of your module assignment, discuss tutor feedback, or practice a presentation. Weekly 30-minute tutorials are available on-campus at Cranfield and online. Make an appointment - select LOCATION (online, SOM Library or Kings Norton Library) > select Academic English Language Tutor.

Academic English workshops: Small language workshops held regularly on-campus at Cranfield and online for you to develop and practice skills interactively. Search 'EnglishSupport' in DATES for the current schedule and to reserve a place.

Self-access language resources: a collection of useful weblinks and interactive learning resources for students wanting general academic English support.

These resources include the 'EAP Toolkit' which covers:

  • Learning skills,
  • Academic writing,
  • Academic reading and critical thinking,
  • Academic listening and notetaking,
  • Academic communication skills,
  • Grammar for academic purposes,
  • Vocabulary for academic purposes.

Access the resources.
