Academic language support

Introduction

We offer a range of support for students who would like to improve their written and spoken academic language. The overall aim is to develop the language skills required for postgraduate study in the UK so it is suitable to both international and home students.

Why is it important?

It can help boost your confidence and improve your ability to communicate verbally and in written form.

What do I need to know?

Support is free and available to all taught and research students. We have a variety of support options:

Academic language tutorials: One to one consultation with an experienced English language tutor, perhaps to discuss a module assignment, analyse a sample of writing, practice a presentation, or review a CV. These are available weekly in 45-min slots with a limit of 3 per calendar month. Please note however that these tutorials cannot provide a full proofreading service and detailed feedback will be limited to approximately 10% of a paper. Make an appointment - select LOCATION (online, SOM Library or Kings Norton Library) > select Academic English Language Tutor.

Academic language workshops: Small interactive group sessions held online and on-campus at Cranfield for you to develop and practice skills interactively. Search 'academic language' in DATES for the current schedule and to reserve a place.

Library Helpdesk: The drop-in academic language support helpdesk is provided in Kings Norton Library, Fridays 14.00-17.00 and SOM Library, Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30.
