Service updates

Library services over the Christmas period

The Management Information and Resource Centre (MIRC) will close at 4pm on Friday 17 December and reopen at 10am on Tuesday 4 January.

The Kings Norton Library will be open 24/7 throughout the holiday period as a study space. Library staff will work until 4.30pm on Friday 17 December and will resume their normal working hours from 9am on Tuesday 4 January. In their absence, you are welcome to borrow and return items using the self-service machines. Please remember that you will need your University ID card to access and leave the building via the side door.

Please remember that most of our library resources (databases, eJournals and eBooks) are available via our website 24/7, as are our referencing and research support areas and lots more. You may also find it helpful to search our blog as many of our previous posts answer frequently asked questions. LinkedIn Learning can provide support for using applications and programmes such as Excel, Matlab and Python.

Collect your book reservations from MIRC

From Monday 8 November you can ask for your books to be delivered to MIRC when you reserve them on Library Search. You can then pick them up from the new remote locker using your University ID card.

We are hoping that this new service will make it easier for School of Management staff and students to access the books they need without walking down to the Kings Norton Library. (You are still welcome to do that if you would like to browse the collection though!).

All you need to do is select MIRC as your Pickup library when you are placing a reservation:

We will then send you an email to let you know when your item is ready for collection. Wait until you have received it, and then head to the remote locker in MIRC. Simply follow the instructions on screen, scan your ID card and the screen will list your available book(s). Select which you want to collect or tap “Select All”, then tap “Open Locker”. The door will ping open with the book(s) already issued. You can print a receipt if you would like one, or get it emailed to you. And while you’re there, you can also review your account and renew your loans.

When you have finished with your loan, simply take it back to the locker, tap the option to “Return” and follow the instructions on screen again. The returns bin will light up to show you where to post the book, and will lock again when you tap "Finished".  You may also return your books at Kings Norton Library if you wish.

Please do let us know if you have any problems using the locker and we will be happy to help you!

New hours and services from 6 September 2021

From 6 September, MIRC will be open 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday. Please read our advice before you visit.

We will also be able to ease some of the restrictions on our services:

  • You will no longer need to pre-book your study seat, so you can drop-in whenever you like and stay as long as you need.
  • You will be able to use the printers without booking a study space.
  • The MIRC print collection will stay in the Kings Norton Library but you will be able to browse, check-out and return books yourself using the self-service kiosks. It will no longer offer a click and collect service. MIRC stock can be found on the top floor, in the shelving to the left of the stairs. Please ask a member of staff if you need any help.
  • If you reserve books online via Library Search, we'll email you when they are available for collection from the Kings Norton Library. There will be no need to pre-book a slot, just visit when it's convenient to collect and check-out your reservations.
  • We will continue to post out loans for all staff and students until October 2021. After that time, we will only offer a postal service to part-time and remote learners.
  • As always, the majority of our resources and support are available via the Library website 24/7

You may have noticed the new lockers in MIRC. We are hoping to switch them on very soon. In future you will be able to order MIRC books to be delivered directly to the lockers to save you walking down the road. You will be able to return them to the lockers when you have finished with them as well.

We are currently refurbishing the MIRC space, and would welcome your ideas about how it can be developed to meet your needs. Please send us any suggestions you might have.

Changes to policy on wearing masks

Please note that restrictions have been lifted and you no longer need to wear a mask in the Library at all times. However, you must wear one if you are unable to maintain social distancing from staff or other students, either whilst seated or moving around the building.
