Off-site access and support

Online access and passwords

Most of our online resources are available from anywhere in the world, all you need is an internet connection.

On site, you will get automatic access to most articles and eBooks found in Library Search and in our list of Databases A-Z.

Off site (and via WiFi at Shrivenham site), you will need your Cranfield login for full text access.
You have two options:

  • we strongly recommend going to: Library website > Databases A-Z > pick a database > enter your Cranfield login.

    • This is the easiest option as database links will automatically prompt you for your Cranfield login where needed.

  • or, if you prefer to go directly to a particular database (e.g. via Google), look for a login / sign in option, choose ‘Institutional’ or 'OpenAthens' login, and select Cranfield University.

Please do not use the extranet (VPN) as most resources are incompatible. Instead, open a new browser and go directly to the library website.

OpenAthens is the authentication system most of our databases require for full text access. Once you have logged in to a resource via OpenAthens with your Cranfield login, your details will be remembered across many other databases in the same session.

There are a few resources which require registration or are not available off-site, please see the A-Z Database list for details.

Postal delivery of books and print materials

Postal delivery of print-only items is available to all registered part-time students, full-time students on a placement, and academic staff primarily based off campus. We will post them to any UK or ROI address using the Royal Mail's Special Delivery service. You will need to sign for them when they arrive, so you might prefer to use your work address.

  • Please check that we have the item you want by using Library Search. To make a postal request: If the item is available for loan, simply email your request, your student ID number and your delivery address to:
  • If the item is on loan to someone else, reserve it using Library Search and then change your account settings to let us know we should post it to you when it is returned. Go to Library Search > 'My Account' > "Personal Information" tab > "Preferred pickup library" > select POSTAGE. This will then be your default for all future reservations. Please make sure that we have the correct address for you.

You can mail books back to us or return them in person. To return books by mail, we recommend you use the same Special Delivery service or other registered post as you will be insured for any loss or damage. Items are your responsibility until they are safely returned to us. We will not post items to you if you live locally.

Return your books to:

Kings Norton Library,
Cranfield University,
