Academic English support

Introduction

Academic English language support is for those students who would like to improve their written and spoken academic English. The overall aim is to develop the language skills required for postgraduate study in the UK.

Why is it important?

It can help boost your confidence and improve your ability to communicate verbally and in written form.

What do I need to know?

Support is free and available to all taught and research students. We have a variety of support options:

Academic English tutorials: One to one consultation with an English language tutor, perhaps to discuss a module assignment, analyse a sample of writing, or practice a presentation. These are available weekly in 30-minute slots. Make an appointment.

English classes: Small regular group sessions held online and on-campus for you to develop and practice skills interactively. Search ‘EAP’ (English for Academic Purposes) on DATES for the current schedule. Reserve a place.

Self-access language resources: a collection of useful weblinks and interactive learning resources for students wanting general academic English support.

These resources include the 'EAP Toolkit' which covers:

  • Learning skills,
  • Academic writing,
  • Academic reading and critical thinking,
  • Academic listening and notetaking,
  • Academic communication skills,
  • Grammar for academic purposes,
  • Vocabulary for academic purposes.

Access the resources.
